Oculoplastic Procedures

A variety of plastic procedures are performed at our facility such as; blepharoplasty, ptosis repairs, lateral tarsal strips, punctoplasty, and cosmetic skin resurfacing. These procedures may be necessary due to certain medical conditions, injury or trauma, birth defects, or the aging process. Fortunately, these outpatient procedures are available to reduce and even eliminate these conditions. These minimally invasive procedures can be performed in our outpatient surgical suite.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical eyelid procedure performed to remove excess skin and fat on the upper and lower lids. Leaving you with a more rested and youthful appearance. Using the CO2 laser in conjunction with the blepharoplasty will remove all those fine lines, crow’s feet, and wrinkles. In addition, CO2 laser can remove those fine lines around your mouth or forehead leaving you looking years younger.

During a comprehensive eye exam, we will evaluate and determine if it is medically necessary to have your condition treated with blepharoplasty. If the procedure isn’t medically necessary by the patient’s insurance company, for example the baggy skin does not affect your direct line of sight, a blepharoplasty can still be performed as a cosmetic procedure.

Although blepharoplasty is an excellent procedure to reduce the appearance of droopy or baggy skin, it does not stop gravity or the natural process of aging. Therefore, it may be necessary to repeat the process in the future if necessary.

Blepharoplasty traditionally takes about one hour to perform. Afterwards, patients are asked to use ice on their eye for the remainder of the day and on and off for the next two days. Ointment is also applied twice a day for a week. Post-operatively we will see patients one week later to have their sutures removed.

Other Conditions

Lateral Tarsal Strip

Lateral tarsal strip is used to treat entropion or ectropion. Entropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns inward, causing eyelash irritation. Ectropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns outward. Eyelid tightening with lateral tarsal strips can correct the deformity of entropion and ectropion, along with the dry eye or excessive tearing, which often results from these conditions.

Punctoplasty is used to treat patients who have excessive tearing due to the closure of the opening of the lacrimal system in the eyelids. The punctum can become partially or completely blocked and a punctoplasty would be necessary. During a punctoplasty the holes are opened to allow proper drainage. This simple and quick procedure can be performed in our office.

Ptosis is a disorder when one or both upper eyelids droop or sag due to weakening of the eye and eyelid muscles. When this occurs, the upper eyelid may hang down slightly or may be more severe and obstruct vision of the eye by covering the pupil.

There are different types of ptosis including congenital (caused at birth) and acquired (developed later in life). Causes of ptosis may include aging, diabetes, eye injuries, neurological issues, stroke, trauma, and complications of eye surgeries.
